This is Abhinavagupta's central concern. And it is yours too — you just haven't framed it this way yet.

You have, at some point in your life, known something with complete clarity. And then, under pressure, forgotten it. Acted against your own deepest understanding. Chose the smaller thing when you knew the larger one was available.

How does that happen? How does knowing become not-knowing?

Kashmir Shaivism's technical answer is Svātantrya — absolute freedom. The infinite Consciousness that is Shiva is not constrained by any law, including the law that says it must remain aware of itself. Its freedom is precisely the freedom to contract, to limit, to appear as something less than it is — not because it has lost anything, but because contraction is itself an expression of its completeness.

Abhinavagupta uses the image of an actor. The great actor does not merely pretend to be the character. They become the character so completely that the performance is genuine. The forgetting is real. The grief on stage is real grief. The audience weeps because what they are watching is not pretence — it is a genuine temporary contraction of a complete human being into a particular role.

Shiva's ignorance of itself is not a failure of omniscience. It is omniscience expressing itself through the experience of limitation. The infinite appears finite not by ceasing to be infinite but by freely taking on the form of the finite — the way an ocean does not cease to be the ocean when it forms a wave.

The practical implication is significant. If the forgetting is itself an expression of freedom rather than a failure — if the limitation is chosen rather than imposed — then the remembering is also available. Not as something that must be constructed from scratch but as something that is already present, waiting to be recognised beneath the contraction.

This is why Kashmir Shaivism's path is called Pratyabhijna — recognition — rather than construction or attainment. You are not building something new. You are remembering something that the forgetting never actually erased.

The question is not how to become infinite. The question is how to stop working so hard at being small.
