The Vedic deities are not supernatural beings demanding worship. They are precise descriptions of cosmic forces that operate simultaneously in the universe and in the human being. Agni is the intelligence of transformation. Vayu is the intelligence of movement. Indra is the intelligence of discernment. Understanding them changes what prayer means.
Om Tryambakam Yajamahe. This is one of the oldest mantras in human history — found in the Rigveda, chanted for three thousand years for healing, for protection, for the transcendence of death. Tryambaka is almost always translated as three-eyed. It means something far more precise.
In the Vedic tradition, Rudra — the fierce, storm-bringing, death-wielding deity — is identified with Prana itself. Not despite the apparent contradiction but because of it. That thou art. The teacher says it to the student in the Chandogya Upanishad nine times, in different ways, until the student stops understanding it intellectually and starts recognising it directly. This is the most important sentence in Indian philosophy — and possibly in all philosophy.
